New Camera: RED Epic-M Dragon!

June 27th, 2014 • by Nina • in Blog, Camera, New Equipment

We are very excited to have just received our first RED Epic-M with its new “Dragon” sensor. The newly released and much talked about sensor delivers on its promises with bold new features: 6K resolution, 16.5 stops of dynamic range and RED’s new color science. The redesigned brain in carbon-fiber and its accompanying magnesium PL mount allows for the camera body to be about a pound lighter than previous versions, for a weight (sans accessories) of a mere 4 lbs.  For Steadicam, handheld or specialty rigs, the carbon fiber Epic-M Red Dragon lends itself as a natural choice, as well as for any production planning heavy compositing and VFX treatment for whom the extra resolution will make all the difference.

We offer a few options in our RED Epic-M Dragon package, notably: the cards’ sizes (64GB, 128GB or 256GB), and the type of battery offered (4x on board Red Volts, or 4x Anton Bauer HCX with the appropriate plate). We also carry at an additional cost the “+1 Adapter Module” (click here for more info) which offer additional EVF/LCD port and power option. Please make sure you specify what your preferences are to our rental department when placing your order. Here are some product shots from the RED website.

Every 6K frame is a 19 megapixel RAW image, which is up to 9x more pixels than 1080p HD. The amount of picture detail found in a 6K image goes beyond that of 35mm, comparing only to 65mm in image density. This means more precise VFX plates, reframing flexibility, and less aliasing artifacts and moiré. Even when outputting 6K footage to 4K or HD, your images will be cleaner and crisper compared to those captured at lower resolutions. When it comes to resolution, bigger is better.

RED DRAGON sensors have a native dynamic range of over 16.5+ stops, giving you a huge advantage in challenging lighting conditions. An improved signal-to-noise ratio gives you confidence that your picture quality will be print and cinema ready from ISO 200 to 2000. Less filters, less IR issues, and less noise gives you more opportunities for perfect exposure.

Vibrant colors, smoother skin tones, and improved tonal variations are just a few of the advantages of the RED DRAGON color science. Brilliant hues and accurate subtleties stand out in every frame, producing RAW images that are true to life. The next generation of sensor technology requires the next generation of color science.
